OLLI of Greater Birmingham presents Aaron Burr: Respected and Reviled with instructor Joanne Bruer, retired instructor of history, Jacksonville State University discusses the fascinating life of Aaron Burr (1756-1836). A hero of the American Revolution, brilliant lawyer, sophisticated intellectual, Vice President under Thomas Jefferson, a loving husband and father, suspected traitor, and best known for taking the life of Alexander Hamilton! Four sessions:
July 7: biographical account of Burr’s life, marriage, careers, and events leading to duel with Hamilton
July 14: the duel and aftermath
July 21: as suspected traitor for his alleged attempt to create a new empire out of western American territory; arrest and trial
July 28: Self-exile to Europe, return to America and life in New York City, and declining years.
