Discoveries are part of every day at UAB. The talented trainees and faculty mentors devote endless hours to their research in the lab, the classroom, and the field, working to find solutions to problems that impact the daily lives of people in Alabama, and worldwide. UAB Graduate School’s “Discoveries in the Making,” is an educational outreach program that seeks to share with members of the community the newest knowledge and the exciting progress in their fields. This month features Kathryn Oliver presenting “Cystic Fibrosis: A New Approach to Correcting the Basic Defect.” Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that causes mucus build-up in the lungs, pancreas, and intestines. As a result, patients with CF are unable to digest nutrients, leading to persistent lung infections and progressive difficulty breathing. The majority of these individuals have one common defect in a protein, which Kathryn’s research focuses on identifying new ways to correct.
