Mothers of the Movement

Presented by Birmingham Civil Rights Institute at Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

In an effort to explore the many ways in which mothers have both shaped the Civil Rights Movement and been affected by some of its most violent events, BCRI will feature Mothers of the Movement (MOM) – a special weekend installation on Friday, May 6th and Saturday, May 7th. Join us in offering appreciation to mothers for their important role as standard bearers and keepers of culture across diverse communities.

With the purchase of a ticket to our historic galleries, you can envelop mom in the story of civil rights, take a stunning photo at our decorative vignette, and experience BCRI’s Mothers of the Movement installation. Mothers who visit our historic galleries on May 6th and 7th will be offered a floral gift to take home. (while supplies last)

Visit our book store to get your copy of Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation by New York Times best-selling author, Anna Malaika Tubbs. In her groundbreaking and essential debut The Three Mothers, scholar Anna Malaika Tubbs celebrates Black motherhood by telling the story of the three women who raised and shaped some of America’s most pivotal heroes. This inspiring and insightful read is the perfect gift for mom.
