Art in Conversation is a bi-monthly series at the BMA where curators, museum professionals, and other special guests lead conversations on art and culture. For this talk, Doris Sung, Assistant Professor for Asian Art History at the University of Alabama, discusses women artists and representation in late imperial China (1368–1911). She will contextualize the social and cultural standards that led to a lack of women artists during this vast period, and by extension, art and museum collections today. This talk also highlights women artists who defied their circumstances to create works of art over the centuries.
