Conducted by: Dr. Quint Harris
Presented by: Cahaba Chamber Chorale Board of Directors
Sponsored by: Cahaba River Society
Program: Water has a profound effect on everyone and everything on earth. As humans, we interact with water in myriad ways, necessity and celebration of life, human relationship, lament, and spiritual journey — all have been or can be shaped by water. The Cahaba Chamber Chorale, in their season-opening concert, will use choral music from the Renaissance to the Modern era to highlight our connection to one of earth’s most essential and precious elements, WATER.
The Cahaba River is a lifeblood for the central Alabama region. The Cahaba is the longest substantially free-flowing river in Alabama and runs 194 miles from its headwater north of Birmingham to where it flows into the Alabama river near the ghost town of Cahaba, the first state capitol. It is among the most scenic and biologically diverse rivers in the United States. Inspiration for this concert has been drawn from the influence the river has on central Alabama through the connection of our community to the diversity that we share. The river creates a common bond. The concert concept has taken up this theme of Water as a common element that all humans and in fact all living things share. The Cahaba Chamber Chorale will partner with the Cahaba River Society to present an aural and visual experience for audience members. Images of the Cahaba River will flow in, and around high-quality choral music presented by the chorale. The centerpiece for the concert will be Water Night composed by Eric Whitacre. As a prelude to this piece extended narrated video footage of scenic places on the river will be projected. Other themes such as the spiritual journey experienced through water, water as a metaphor for love gained and lost, and water as the spark for lament or epiphany will be highlighted.
