Birmingham Reads

 Books-A-Million Locations, Birmingham, AL 35209

A partnership of the Literacy Council, the Junior League of Birmingham, Better Basics, and The Children s Literacy Guild Birmingham Reads consists of a book drive and a reading day. The book drive is April 1-15 with all books donated to local area schools and children. The goal for the book drive is 25,000 books and you can either donate books (new or gently used) or donate online ($1=1book) on the Birmingham Reads website. We are working to get big corporate businesses to participate and I should have a list of ones that agreed in the next week or so. In conjunction with the drive, there is a Birmingham Reads Day on April 14th in which 750 volunteers read at Birmingham city schools classrooms k-5 from noon-2. Every child will take home the book read to them, donated by Books-a-Million. NBC and Books a Million are both sponsoring the drive and BAM is having a "kick off" reading event at their store in Brookwood Mall on April 2nd in which a local "celebrity newscaster" from NBC 13 will read a book and Clifford the dog will be there, etc.
