The Iron and Steel Museum of Alabama, located a short walk from Tannehill’s Civil War era stone furnaces, chronicles the iron and steel industry in Alabama from its beginnings to the present day. The early ironworks at Tannehill gave rise to the Birmingham Iron and Steel District, driving Alabama industry and the growth of the Birmingham area. Exhibits focus on Civil War era iron-making, geology, furnace fuels, cookware, and Birmingham’s cast iron pipe industry. Visitors can also see a mid-1800s machine shop, original parts of the Six Mile Bloomery Forge dating to 1863, and other historical artifacts relating to Alabama’s iron and steel industry.
