GirlSpring, Inc., a Birmingham-based nonprofit, founded by Birmingham Activist & Philanthropist, Jane Stephens Comer, focuses on issues, activities, concerns of girls and young women, ages 9-21 in Alabama. GirlSpring researches, collects, and provides access to information related to issues facing girls and young women. We want females of all races, classes, and socioeconomic backgrounds to have access to unbiased, factual, well-informed information relating to their lives and choices they encounter. We present content related to their physical, cultural, social, political, and economic life in a context of both current and historical relevance.

Today, we are over 1,000 women strong, with a master plan to replicate GirlSpring, nationally.

We have monthly gatherings where presenters who are experts in their field discuss issues concerning girls and young women; approach subjects related to girls and young women presenting them with good choices; present films and conduct interactive gatherings for girls and young women. Feel free to contact us regarding any idea you may have about an event you may believe would be important for girls or young women in your area.

Through our web site, we provide news and information educating girls and young women on issues so they may gain a better understanding of their choices. We also inform them of what their ancestors did to enhance their liberation, thus their lives.

We mentor and network girls and young women so they have positive role models, access to people they can admire and insight into positions they may aspire to reach. We have a three-phase plan for our mentoring program beginning with a simple “Dream Day” followed by the development of a comprehensive program and ending with full implementation of the program.
