Through recorded oral histories, original photo collections, memorabilia, technical manuals, and vintage equipment, the rich history of Black radio in Birmingham is coming to light.

The BBRM received its 501c3 in 2004. Our collection has been expanded since first initiated in 1992 and has been referenced in history books on the role of radio in the civil rights movement and on numerous web sites. Since 2008, we’ve partnered with the University of Alabama’s School of Library Sciences. using their student interns to catalog our collection. We are planning joint work with the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute towards the upcoming 2013 commemoration of 1963 and planning a move to a downtown location this year.

Awarded a Thomas Jefferson award from the Jefferson County Historical Society in 2008, the BBRM has been a source of information for researchers. It will become an educational destination point in Birmingham for all citizens. curious about our rich history in radio.
