Founded in 1966 by Belafonte and actor Sidney Poitier, the SCL Foundation was created to provide financial resources for the non-violent protest activities led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The foundation raised money to pay for the bail of arrested protesters and to provide travel and lodging accommodations. The SCL Foundations focus has evolved into a service organization that works to reduce health disparities with a focus on HIV/AIDS, address the issues related to human trafficking, and empower a new generation of community impact.

According to the SCL Foundations President Bernice L. Frazier, the commemorations theme represents an evolution in the struggle for equal rights with a shift to Quantum Responsibility.
