Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham is a corps of attorney volunteers coordinated by a professional staff driven to improve access to justice. Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham (VLB) is the only non-profit in Alabama that provides immediate access to free high-quality attorneys so low-income and indigent families can obtain critically needed legal services.

Last year, VLB served 3,331 low-income clients, more than any other pro bono organization in Alabama, where we are the only state in the nation that provides no state funding for civil legal aid. Some 550 attorneys volunteered, donating 4,500 hours, which is $1 million worth of free legal services to the poor. VLB serves these clients by deploying more than 20 legal Help Desks a month throughout the city.  This model was recognized by the American Bar Association as being the best in the country for unique, innovative delivery of free legal aid. As compassionate legal advocates, we are relentless in our pursuit of justice for low-income people facing civil legal programs. We focus on solving legal issues so our clients can have Safe Families, Safe Housing, and Safe Finances. We also are the only legal aid organization in Alabama with a special program dedicated to Serving Veterans.

We only exist because of the generosity of our donors. As a steadfast organization, we value our supporters and take every action necessary to uphold complete transparency. For every $1 invested in VLB, the Birmingham community receives an average of $12.13 of immediate and long-term return on investment. (Alabama Civil Justice Foundation). We welcome your support and could not exist without you!
