The People Can Fly

This mural also came about as apart of the HBCU SpringComing 2022 edition festival; three Alabama-based or HBCU alumni artists came together to create murals that related to the theme of “The Overcoming.” These murals were dedicated to displaying the forward movement in Black communities specifically in Birmingham. This particular mural was created by E.L. Chisolm and it was inspired by Virginia Hamilton’s Black American picture book entitled The People Could Fly. It includes tales of animals, enslaved Africans, fairy tales, etc. This mural is a call to spectators to take flight despite the challenging circumstances surrounding them.
