A Let's Roam Scavenger Hunt or Team Builder

Alabama’s largest city is defined by four pillars: sports, art, music and the Civil Rights Movement. On this fun-filled Birmingham scavenger hunt, we make a loop around the city center in search of storied buildings, great green spaces and cultural institutions. Why was the Alabama Theatre the “Showplace of the South”? Which two female heroes like to hang out in Linn Park? Find out on this scavenger hunt of Birmingham! This scavenger hunt is app-lead. No tour guide or reservation required.

Alabama Veterans Memorial

Historic Building/Landmark ; Park/Garden

The Alabama Veterans Memorial is far more than just a park… It is a message from all Alabamians, recognizing the price of freedom and peace. Amid peaceful Alabama woodlands, you can peruse the names of Alabamians lost to war. A time line in the Memorial walkway outlines historic events of the 20th century, visitors will find descriptions of Alabama’s 23 Medal of Honor recipients of the 20th century, and in the courtyard, Medal of Honor stories appear on columns with artwork and letters. In our auditorium, enjoy presentations on the contributions Alabama veterans have made to preserve our nation’s freedom.

Aldridge Gardens

Eddie Aldridge caught his first glimpse of the Coxe Family Estate in 1966 when he was hired to plant three magnolias on the property nestled near the corner of Lorna Road and Rocky Ridge Ranch Road. Eddie and his father, both noted horticulturalists, knew beauty when they saw it. Both were nurserymen and had been given the opportunity to work in a profession that developed their appreciation of nature and the beauty of the environment. In fact, both agreed that this unique piece of property, which was located in the heart of Hoover, would be a perfect place for a botanical garden. The Acquisition Eleven years passed, and the Coxe Family made the decision to sell the estate. Upon hearing that news, Eddie wasted no time in making an offer on the property that he and his father had long admired. In 1977, Eddie purchased the estate, and with that step began the first of many toward developing the property as a public garden. The Vision Commercial and residential development in Hoover was growing at a rapid pace. The City of Hoover, which had been experiencing exponential growth, was now recognized as the sixth largest city in Alabama and on of the fastest growing in the South. By 1994, Eddie knew the timing for development was right and began exploring options for transforming the property into a public garden. In collaboration with the City of Hoover and the City Council, the land was formally dedicated as a public garden and a resolution was passed to ensure the property would remain so in perpetuity. A Master Plan was commissioned and approved in 1997, twenty years after Eddie had acquired the property

Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens

Arlington is a fine example of Greek Revival architecture dating from the 1840s. The house was built by Judge William S. Mudd, one of the ten founders of Birmingham. The house is furnished with a collection of 19th century decorative arts. Located on six acres in the heart of Old Elyton, the first permanent County Seat of Jefferson County, Arlington is a center for historical, cultural, and civic activities. Arlington’s historic dining room is available for breakfasts, luncheons, dinners, and receptions. Weddings are scheduled on the beautifully landscaped grounds. All events are reserved in advance. Thursdays at Arlington: Dine in Arlington’s historic garden room each Thursday in June, July and August. A complimentary tour of the museum is included with lunch. For reservations, call 780-5656.

Beacon Park

Well lit at night, has a kiddies playground, two (2) picnic pavilions, barbecue pits, a walking track, two (2) tennis courts and public restrooms. It is a great facility for individual or group gatherings. Many civic and family reunions reserve the park for use each year. Many individual citizens utilize the walking track from 5:00 am until 10:00 pm each day.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Birmingham Botanical Gardens is Alabama’s largest living museum with more than 10,000 different plants in its living collections. The Gardens’ 67.5 acres contains 25+ unique gardens, 30+ works of original outdoor sculpture and miles of serene paths. The Gardens features the largest public horticulture library in the U.S., conservatories, a wildflower garden, two rose gardens, the Southern Living garden, and Japanese Gardens with a traditionally crafted tea house. Education programs run year round and over 10,000 school children enjoy free science-curriculum based field trips annually. Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the most visited free attraction in Alabama, is open daily, offering free admission to more than 350,000 yearly visitors.

Black Creek Park, Fultondale

The City has a park facility, Black Creek Park, located just off of highway 31. This is the home of the softball fields provided for our residents, recreational and church leagues. There is a one mile (lighted) walking track surrounded by a small stream that flows along side for everyone to enjoy. You will find several people walking and jogging around the track and those who just want to enjoy the beauty of nature and having a picnic around the park. For the family reunions and company picnics, there is a pavilion available with tables provided that seats 100 people or more. A bandstand is available for those who want to provide entertainment during their picnic. There are currently conservation projects underway to improve Black Creek. Cleanup days are held and volunteers are welcome to participate in these projects.

Brookside Ball Park and Greenway

Directions: FROM BIRMINGHAM I-65 North to Exit 264 Exit ramp off I-65 & under the interstate and past Flying J Gas Plaza Continue to Drive west on Daniel Payne Drive At the 2nd traffic signal, turn right onto Coalburg Road To Brookside Municipal Complex — Drive 7 miles. City Hall, Community Center and Fire Station is on the left before the “t” Intersection onto Bevins-Brookside Road. To Bensko Ball Park and site of Greenway Festival -Drive 7 miles to a “T” intersection at Sharon Heights Baptist Church At the “T” intersection turn right onto Brookside-Bevins Road Drive ½ mile to old town Brookside to 4-Way Stop Go through 4-Way Stop—the road becomes Price Street Drive one block on Price Street and turn left at stop sign onto Cardiff Street. Follow Cardiff Street making a 90 degree right turn at stop sign into Bensko Park.

The park is near grocery stores, restaurants and stores in Centreville and Brent. We are located 20 miles south of Montevallo and 30 miles east of Tuscaloosa. We have several rentals for meetings, weddings, reunions

Caldwell Park

Located at 26th Street South and Highland Avenue adjacent to the Virginia Samford Theatre, the park was named for Dr. Henry Martyn Caldwell, 1836-1895, one of the earliest founding fathers of the city, and president of the Elyton Land Company, which developed early Birmingham, from 1875-1895. He gave Highland Avenue its name and was responsible for its development. He was also responsible for the development of Lakeview Park, which is now known as Highland Golf Course. It is the site of many cultural events, including the annual Do Dah Parade and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Series. It was extensively renovated in 2006.

Cheaha State Park

This foothill of the Appalachian Mountains is the highest point in the state. Standing 2,407 feet above sea level, it is no wonder why the local Creek Indians named this place "Chaha," meaning high place. The park hosts hiking trails, mountain bike trails, a lake for swimming and fishing, an observation tower at the highest point, campgrounds, cabins, chalets, motel rooms, a restaurant, an indian artifact museum, and much more.The park is also completely surrounded by the Talladega National Forest which offers additional recreational resources, like easily accessible trails to waterfalls and more.

Chelsea Park

Chelsea Park is located off Highway 39, just past Chelsea Middle School.

East Lake Park

East Lake was planned in 1886 by the East Lake Land Company to help sell home sites to the men who came in the 1870's to work in Birmingham's steel industry. First named Lake Como, after the lake in the Italian Alps, it soon came to be called East Lake. Using water from Roebuck Springs and Village Creek this 45 acre man – made lake, within a 100 acre park, enhanced the area by providing a year round pleasure resort. In a short time East Lake Park became a major recreational center of the Birmingham area and in 1887 a street car line was run out to the park. Among the amusement offered at the park through the years were a ferris wheel, a shooting gallery, boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, golf, baseball, a steamboat, a zoo, and band concerts and other entertainment in the pavilion. The City of Birmingham purchased the park in 1917 and today, East Lake Park is one of the largest municipal recreational facilities in Alabama.

Eddie Kendrick Memorial Park

The Eddie Kendrick Memorial Park honors Birmingham native and Temptations lead singer Eddie Kendrick, who traveled the world but never forgot his Alabama roots. Sculpted by Ronald Scott McDowell, the Kendrick statue captures for eternity the magic moves of his Motown music. Inlaid in a granite backdrop behind Kendrick, the four other Temptations energize the work with their fine-tuned choreography. Born in Birmingham in 1937, Kendrick and the Temptations hit the top of the music charts in 1964 with “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” the first of 37 career Top Ten hits. Kendrick died in a Birmingham hospital in 1992. Eddie Kendrick Memorial Park is located at the corner of 4th Avenue North and 18th Street in Birmingham’s famed Civil Rights District, just a block from the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame.

Fultondale Bark Park

Fultondale Bark Park consists of two off-leash parks for big and small dogs. The park is located directly behind Fultondale Children’s Park off Stouts Road in Fultondale, AL, near beautiful Black Creek. The parks are supported by the Friends of the Fultondale Bark Park, a group of volunteers who are dedicated to making the Fultondale Bark Park a safe and fun experience for you and your dogs.

Glen Oaks Park - Fairfield

The park sits on Glen Crest Drive in the Glen Oaks neighborhood. The park is the center of the Glen Oaks community and is popular due to its use as a field for football, baseball and soccer teams. The soccer fields were used as an Olympics training site in 1996.

Heardmont Park & Senior Center

Senior Community Center, Gazebo, Lighted Walking Trails, ¼’ Track (limited public use), 4 Lighted Tennis Courts, 9 Baseball/Softball Fields, 3 Soccer Fields and Tot Lot & Swing Sets. Higgins Ferry Launch

HIGGINS FERRY PARK RULES AND REGULATIONS OCCUPANCY Maximum occupancy per camp site is 8 persons. Over 4 persons per camp site is charged an additional $1.00 each day. 2 motor vehicles per camp site. RESERVATIONS; A deposit equal to one nights rental will be required in order to reserve a campsite. Unless reservations is cancelled 2 days in advance, the deposit is non-refundable. There is no firm reservation on a specific campsite. RULES AND REGULATIONS. 1. USE OF FACIUTIES-It shall be unlawful to erect or occupy any site with unsightly or inappropriate camping equipment Pitch dug tents or perking trailers or other camping equipment designated for such purposes shall be unlawful. A $5.00 refundable key charge. Bathhouse locked at 9 PM open at 7 AM 2A} Operation of Vehicle-Driving any vehicle careless and needlessly disregarding the rights or safety of others or in a manner so as to endanger or be likely to endanger any person or property shall be unlawful. PETS AND ANIMALS- Bringing a dog, cat, or other animal into the park unless it is caged or upon a leash not longer than 6ft. Or otherwise under physical restrictive control at all time* shall be unlawful. No persons shall keep noisy animals, dangerous dog or animal or one which is disturbing other persons in the park. 4} SANITATION Cleaning offish or food or washing clothing at faucets located in restrooms shall be unlawful. No persons shall use the Park refuse containers or other park refuse utilities for dumping household or commercial garbage or trash brought as such private property.

Homestead Hollow

Relax by one of our many streams and listen to Live local entertainment all day. Enjoy our great food that makes your mouth scream for more. Children’s activities: ride the ponies, circle in our wagon ride, jump in the moon walk or climb the rock wall. Kids and adults all enjoy our petting zoo. Visit and talk with our Herbalist and find out more about grandma’s remedies or those nature produces naturally. Homestead Hollow’s General store is open for you to visit and shop for those home-made fried pies and other great items all day during show dates. Homestead Hollow is located in Springville, Alabama, just 2 miles off I-59, exit 154. 27 acres of parking and our trams make it easy to park, get to the entrance and start having fun immediately.

Homewood Central Park

A beautiful community park in central Homewood. Homewood Central Park is located adjacent to the Homewood Community Center. Some of the amenities available in the park are 6 pavilions with picnic tables, two tennis courts, amphitheater, large playground, cement walking trails and play meadow. This is the location of our summer movie series "Friday Night Flicks." Pavilion Rental Rates: $75 / Homewood residents – 5hr time period ($10/each additional hour) $125 / Non-residents – 5hr time period ($20/each additional hour) PARK RULES Any park area should be a place of personal enjoyment and relaxation in addition to a place of recreation. In order to fulfill the needs of many different people, policies and regulations are set to aid in controlling the use and conduct in the parks to best provide a quality experience for each visitor. All park areas are covered by an ordinance designed to protect the park atmosphere. In essence, the same laws apply in a park as in any public place or roadway, but several regulations are stressed to cover general park usage. These rules and regulations are designed to help you enjoy your parks. Parks close at 11:00 p.m. unless a special permit is issued by the Parks and Recreation Board. 1. No alcoholic beverages or smoking 2. Obey speed limits 3. Park in designated areas only 4. Place all litter in trash containers 5. Clean areas used and leave them orderly 6. No firearms permitted 7. Fires may be built only in grills or barbecue pavilions 8. Pavilions may be reserved only by obtaining a permit 9. Soccer, softball, baseball fields may be reserved by Homewood teams only 10. Golfing is not allowed on park property 11. Obey posted closing times
