Alabama Art Supply

The Alabama Ballet Center for Dance (ABCD) is an 8,000 square-foot facility featuring 6 state-of-the-art studios. Each studio is equipped with sprung flooring and sound equipment and can be rented by the hour for rehearsal and teaching space. In addition, the ABCD can be rented for meetings, parties or special events. Amenities include an on-site kitchen, large patio, lobby area, chairs and tables.

Alabama Booksmith

Bookstore

A visit to The Alabama Booksmith is a mini-vacation. Located in Homewood, the bookstore specializes in the promotion of Alabama authors, is a member of the Booksense consortium, and an oasis for any book lover. Since 1995, several hundred writers have signed and read in the store and at events around the state. The Booksmith brings books and authors to reading groups, libraries and schools as well as huge conferences like READ ALABAMA in Jasper, THE OTHER COVERED BRIDGE in Oneonta and ON THE BRINK in Jacksonville.

Alabama Center for Architechure

By renovating a historic building in downtown Birmingham, the Center for Architecture will serve as the physical home for the B.A.F. and AIA Birmingham Chapter, vibrant nonprofit organizations that provide resources to both the public and building industry professionals. These organizations and the Center will be a resource for communities, individuals & business owners who need design guidance. Through exhibitions, programs and special events, the Center aims to improve the quality and sustainability of the built environment, foster exchange between the design, construction, real estate communities, and encourage collaborations across the city and state. It will be an educational center for the community to learn more about the value of architecture. The Center will be dedicated to developing the understanding of architecture and its influence on our lives, our communities and world. The Center will improve the quality of civic and community life in the downtown area. When the center is complete, it will include private conference room, private work stations, kitchen and bar area, outdoor courtyard and exhibit/gallery space. The Center for Architecture was envisioned with three core principals in mind: Engagement Bringing citizens in touch with their physical environment not only through exhibits, but also through active participation in competitions, symposia, press conferences, and workshops Supporting communities in understanding the existing conditions and the future potential of their physical environments Encouraging civic discourse and an open, transparent, and sustained public dialogue Celebrating the design achievements of the region and presenting the design accomplishments of other parts of the world in a manner that raises our aspirations. Education Expanding our current educational programs for Kindergarten through 12th grade Providing an exhibit space for high schools and colleges to exhibit their design related work Educating the communities through exhibits, lecture series, and charrettes Providing a forum for professional and citizen dialogue about the importance of quality design, beautiful public spaces, good civic architecture, and sustainable, family-friendly neighborhood Collaboration Connecting professionals, community, and civic leaders to build high quality environments Fostering collegiality and exchange between industry professionals and providing professional development opportunities for them Bridging the gap between the suburbs and city on regional issues such as the environment Providing gallery space to exhibit projects related to good design

Explore the Alabama Museum of Natural History housed in historic Smith Hall, one of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture in the region. See the Hodges meteorite, the only meteorite known to have struck a human, and the State Fossil of Alabama: Basilosaurus cetoides. The Museum is located in Smith Hall on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Capstone Drive on The University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa . Directions: To reach the Museum from Highway 82 (McFarland Boulevard) , take the University Boulevard exit and follow the signs leading west to Hackberry Lane. If you are arriving on I-59, exit onto I-359 and take the University Boulevard exit traveling east to Hackberry Lane.

Seven hundred years of medicine and ill health are represented with instruments, equipment, specimens and models used by healthcare professionals around the world. Experience the history of medicine, its immeasurable progress and devastating challenges, through the collections of the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The AMHS is located on the 3rd Floor of the Lister Hill Library on the UAB campus. Take first bank of elevators to the third floor, then enter the double doors on your left. Many events are held in the Ireland Room, which is located through the double doors on your right after exiting the elevator and is then through the last door on your left.

Alabama School of Fine Arts

The Alabama School of Fine Arts is a partially residential public school authorized and funded by the Alabama Legislature to provide tuition-free instruction to impassioned students, grades 7-12. The school provides focused specialty instruction in Creative Writing, Dance, Mathematics and Science, Music, Theatre Arts and Visual Arts, plus core academic courses necessary to earn an Alabama high school diploma. The school operates under its own enabling legislation, policies and procedures, guided by a state-appointed Board of Trustees, under whom serves a staff of more than 100 full and part- time administrators, teachers and support workers. Alabama students pay a small semester matriculation fee, but no tuition. Students from outside Alabama pay tuition, which the school sets annually. Residential students pay room and board costs, set annually. ASFA strongly emphasizes performance and learning. The dual requirements of specialty and core academic courses result in a school day typically beginning at 7:55 a.m. and ending at 4:40 p.m. or later. Although studious, the school’s atmosphere is in no way stiff or severe. Faculty, staff and students value freedom within the bounds of mutually respectful relationships and behavior, subject to rules discussed in the Student Handbook and Residential Life supplement ( For more information see Current Students). The building can be leased for educational purposes by the ASFA Foundation including the Recital Hall, Theatre, Creative Writing Lecture Hall, Lobby, Cafeteria and classrooms. The use of the building by ASFA students has precedence over any outside engagement.

Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and Museum

The purpose of the ASHOF is to honor, preserve and perpetuate the names, deeds and records of those, living and dead, who by achievement or service, have brought lasting fame and honor to the State of Alabama and to themselves through their outstanding accomplishments. Over the last thirty-five years, the ASHOF has become the benchmark for other Sports Museums across the country, with over 5,000 sports artifacts elegantly displayed in the 33,000 square foot building. Out of ESPN’s list of the top 100 athletes of the century, five out of the top fifteen greatest ever are in the ASHOF: Jesse Owens, Hank Aaron, Joe Louis, Willie Mays, and Carl Lewis.

Alabama Theatre

Built in 1927 and widely known as "the Showplace of the South," the Alabama Theatre features marble, plaster and gold-leaf detailing and its original Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ. The Spanish-Moorish architecture and fixtures from around the world hearken back to the days when movie palaces offered an escape from the everyday into the extraordinary. Now this opulent facility is available for your event! The theatre is available for concerts and live performances with a full stage and a seating capacity of 2,176. Private receptions and events up to full seating capacity, and catered events up to 350. Projection capabilities include film, DVD, and Blu-Ray as well as computer and laptop inputs for projection onto one of Alabama’s largest screens making it ideal for movie premieres or corporate events.

Alabama Veterans Memorial

The Alabama Veterans Memorial is far more than just a park… It is a message from all Alabamians, recognizing the price of freedom and peace. Amid peaceful Alabama woodlands, you can peruse the names of Alabamians lost to war. A time line in the Memorial walkway outlines historic events of the 20th century, visitors will find descriptions of Alabama’s 23 Medal of Honor recipients of the 20th century, and in the courtyard, Medal of Honor stories appear on columns with artwork and letters. In our auditorium, enjoy presentations on the contributions Alabama veterans have made to preserve our nation’s freedom.

Alabama Waldorf School

Alabama Waldorf School is a community dedicated to educating responsible world citizens. Located in the Crestwood neighborhood of Birmingham, AWS is the only Waldorf School in Alabama. It offers strong academics enlivened by the arts and strives to provide a well-rounded education to students of families across all income levels and backgrounds. Since 1987, AWS (formerly The Redmont School in the Waldorf Tradition) has met the educational needs of families from many religious and ethnic backgrounds, as well as a broad geographical area. Over the past 24 years, our community has witnessed firsthand the positive effects of Waldorf education, the world’s fastest growing, nonsectarian, independent school movement.

Alabama Wildlife Center

The Alabama Wildlife Center is Alabama's oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation facility and annually receives approximately 2,500 animals from over 100 different species. AWC is a nonprofit organization whose dual mission is: To provide medical and rehabilitative care for Alabama's injured and orphaned native wildlife in order to permit their return to the wild, and To educate people in order to heighten awareness and appreciation of Alabama's native wildlife. The Alabama Wildlife Center was founded in 1977 by Anne G. Miller as a small home-based organization with no paid staff. The Center began its association with Oak Mountain State Park with the development of the Treetop Nature Trail which opened in 1985. The rehabilitation, education and administrative facilities of the Center have occupied their current home in Oak Mountain State Park for over twenty years. Since the Alabama Wildlife Center's small beginnings in its Founder's back yard, the Center has grown to be Alabama's largest full-service wildlife rehabilitation center. The Alabama Wildlife Center receives nearly 2,500 injured and orphaned wild birds, mammals and reptiles of over 100 species annually. Since its inception, well over 50,000 native Alabama wild animals have been helped because of the efforts of the Wildlife Center and its staff. The Center's Wildlife Emergency Hotline receives almost 4,000 calls each year and has helped more than 100,000 Alabamians since its inception.

Eddie Aldridge caught his first glimpse of the Coxe Family Estate in 1966 when he was hired to plant three magnolias on the property nestled near the corner of Lorna Road and Rocky Ridge Ranch Road. Eddie and his father, both noted horticulturalists, knew beauty when they saw it. Both were nurserymen and had been given the opportunity to work in a profession that developed their appreciation of nature and the beauty of the environment. In fact, both agreed that this unique piece of property, which was located in the heart of Hoover, would be a perfect place for a botanical garden. The Acquisition Eleven years passed, and the Coxe Family made the decision to sell the estate. Upon hearing that news, Eddie wasted no time in making an offer on the property that he and his father had long admired. In 1977, Eddie purchased the estate, and with that step began the first of many toward developing the property as a public garden. The Vision Commercial and residential development in Hoover was growing at a rapid pace. The City of Hoover, which had been experiencing exponential growth, was now recognized as the sixth largest city in Alabama and on of the fastest growing in the South. By 1994, Eddie knew the timing for development was right and began exploring options for transforming the property into a public garden. In collaboration with the City of Hoover and the City Council, the land was formally dedicated as a public garden and a resolution was passed to ensure the property would remain so in perpetuity. A Master Plan was commissioned and approved in 1997, twenty years after Eddie had acquired the property
