The orchestra has been in the habit of hiring different guest conductors for each presentation, so the return of last year's conductor, Gary Thor Wedow, was a rare occurrence. Little has changed in Wedow's astute vision of the oratorio. Tight segues, fleet ensemble numbers, nicely shaped arcs, choral power waiting in the wings, drama – both subdued and majestic, were the hallmarks of this reading. Collapse -

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The pairing of a Bach concerto and a Bruckner symphony on this weekend's Alabama Symphony Masterworks concerts was a salient reminder of how Justin Brown, now ASO's music director laureate, has challenged the orchestra – and himself – during the past six seasons.
Brown has never been afraid to take risks. In 2006, he was piano soloist and conductor in Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2. In a daredevil feat a year later, he did the same in two movements of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. Mozart and Beethoven concertos are old hat for him. Collapse
