BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Like clockwork, George Frideric Handel's “Messiah” returned to the Alys Stephens Center Saturday for the Alabama Symphony's annual presentation.

The orchestra has been in the habit of hiring different guest conductors for each presentation, so the return of last year's conductor, Gary Thor Wedow, was a rare occurrence. Little has changed in Wedow's astute vision of the oratorio. Tight segues, fleet ensemble numbers, nicely shaped arcs, choral power waiting in the wings, drama – both subdued and majestic, were the hallmarks of this reading. Collapse

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The pairing of a Bach concerto and a Bruckner symphony on this weekend's Alabama Symphony Masterworks concerts was a salient reminder of how Justin Brown, now ASO's music director laureate, has challenged the orchestra – and himself – during the past six seasons.

Brown has never been afraid to take risks. In 2006, he was piano soloist and conductor in Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2. In a daredevil feat a year later, he did the same in two movements of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. Mozart and Beethoven concertos are old hat for him. Collapse
