After six years at the helm of the Alabama Symphony, Justin Brown is set to embark on his final concerts as music director. He will end his tenure the same way he started before he took the job — with a Mahler symphony and by conducting from the keyboard in a Mozart piano concerto. Masterworks concerts on Friday and Saturday and a Concertmaster and Friends event on Tuesday are telling reminders of Brown’s versatility. In a recent interview, he brought up the great German conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler, who said, "The conductor has one arch-enemy to fight: routine." It has become Brown’s credo at the ASO. Collapse

Many already knew the program through hearings of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, Avner Dorman's “Astrolatry” and Paul Lansky's “Shapeshifters” at the Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham or on a recently released CD of Lansky's music. To hear this finely honed ensemble in much different and larger surroundings reflected on its versatility and adaptability. They are attributes that Music Director Justin Brown has honed in the past six seasons, and that have contributed to its recognition as an adventurous orchestra. Collapse -

From the nearly inaudible basses that began Carl Nielsen’s “Helios” Overture to the broad landscapes of a Jean Sibelius symphony, music from Scandinavia played out in an array of color and light at Friday’s Alabama Symphony Masterworks concert. If Nielsen’s overture represented the break of day with its rising crescendos and soaring horn signals, Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor was mid-afternoon, creating an atmosphere that was more midnight sun than wintry cold. Carl Nielsen, Edvard Grieg and Jean Sibelius embody the nationalistic spirit that pervaded their respective nations of Denmark, Norway and Finland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nielsen’s “Helios Overture” sings praises to the sun, while Sibelius’ Symphony No. 4 in A minor is filled with icy foreboding.
Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, which will spotlight piano soloist Orion Weiss, is the composer’s signature symphonic work. Its heart-melting melodies and sumptuous harmonies have been immortalized countless times, from historic recordings by Percy Grainger and Artur Rubenstein to the more recent CDs by Leif Ove Andsnes and Stephen Hough. Those are the dates for this year’s Decorators’ ShowHouse, which is full of decorating ideas. Lisa Hunter of Lisa Hunter Interiors turned a boat into a hanging bed in a boy’s room; Perry Umphrey of Umphrey Interiors put two, Ikea bookshelves on their sides and topped them with Plexiglass to make a huge coffee table in the den; and Jean Clayton of Christine’s hung a colorful shag rug on the breakfast room wall for a pop of color.

Romanticism in music, as in art and literature, is defined by a gamut of emotions ranging from grief to ecstasy. It transcends the so-called romantic period, which music historians conveniently pigeonhole to the 19th century. On Monday, a Concertmaster and Friends events drove to the heart of the word’s broader meaning in “Romantic Expressions,” a program of uninterrupted music and poetry. Originally slated for that most romantic day, Feb. 14, it was rescheduled because of a death in the family. The calendar didn’t matter. Collapse

Since 2004, Alabama Symphony’s "Messiah" performances have had guest conductors at the helm. Interpretations have ranged from grandiose to concise. William Fred Scott (2004, 2005) conducted orchestra, soloists and an 180-voice chorus with rhythmic urgency. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Martin Pearlman reduced the choir to 40 in 2006 in a visceral, historically informed reading. Raymond Leppard, in 2008, fashioned an insightful reading by assigning 24 singers to a chamber choir that alternated with the full chorus. Interpretations by Scott Yoo, David Lockington and Neal Gittleman have contributed to the variety. Collapse

University of Montevallo music professor Joseph Landers will present a recital of his compositions today at 2:30 p.m. in the Hoover Public Library, 200 Municipal Drive. Performers from UM and the Alabama Symphony will play several works, including the premiere of Landers' String Quartet No. 1. Admission is free. Landers garnered international attention in another arena last March, when his discovery of a lost Stravinsky orchestration of "Song of the Volga Boatmen" received its world premiere in London. It came to the attention of conductor Leon Botstein, who programmed the work on an all-Stravinsky program by the American Symphony Orchestra. The American premiere will take place Jan. 20 in New York's Carnegie Hall. Landers discovered the orchestral parts to the score while cleaning house at a Lindenhurst, N.Y., music library, then reconstructed the full score. Collapse

One of the greatest choral works ever written, Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B Minor can captivate listeners with charm and intimacy as well as its majesty. Among its most profound moments are those with just a few performers -- an easy dialogue between alto and oboe in "Qui Sedes," the pastoral interplay of flute, soprano and tenor in "Domine Deus," the ornamental playfulness of a solo violin and alto in "Laudamus te."
The Alabama Symphony's performance excelled in this realm Friday night at the Alys Stephens Center, enhanced by flutist Lisa Wienhold's sweet, graceful solos and fluid playing from oboist James Sullivan and violinist Daniel Szasz. Soprano soloist Kiera Duffy contributed strength, conviction and angelic purity in several arias and in a duet with alto Jennifer Rivera. Collapse -
