Music Corner Concert: The Voice of the Violin

Seventeen-year-old violinist Haeun Honney Kim, a junior at the Indian Springs School, Birmingham, AL, started learning the violin when she was four years old. She is currently studying violin with Cornelia Heard, Valere Potter Chair and Chair of the String Department at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, and Daniel Szasz, Concertmaster of Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Honney’s previous teachers include Jenny Gregoire and Julia Sakarova. She has been a recipient of the Myra Jackson Blair Scholarship, full merit –based scholarship by the Blair school of Music, Vanderbilt University for the last six years. She has been the concertmaster of the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra for the last three years and was named concertmaster of the 2015 and 2016 Alabama All State Festival Orchestra.

Over the years, Honney has been awarded with prizes at numerous competitions. Most recently, she was named the Grand Prize winner of the 2017 Lois Pickard Competition and she will be playing as a soloist with Alabama Symphony Orchestra in March 2018. She was the first prize winner of the 2016 Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition in Hilton Head Island, and was the Grand Prize winner of the 2016 Delta Symphony Young Artist Competition. In addition, Honney was selected as the Musical Wunderkind when the Moscow Ballet performed Great Russian Nutcracker and performed Dying Swan with the principal ballerina. Internationally, she won first place in the junior division (age 11-15) of the 2014 ENKOR International Competition for Violin and Piano and third place at the Second Leopold Auer International Violin Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia. Other awards include first prize of the Alabama Federation of Music Club, alternate winner of Southern Division of the MTNA competition, and merit award of the Blount-Slawson Young Artists Competition. Since the age of twelve, Honney has appeared as a soloist with the Louisiana Philharmonic in New Orleans, LA, the Georgia Philharmonic in Atlanta, GA, the Southern Adventist University in Chattanooga, TN, the Delta Symphony Orchestra in Jonesboro, AK, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, Hilton head, SC, and Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra in Birmingham, AL. Over the past summers, she participated in Credo, Arianna Chamber Music Festival, Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, Heifetz International Music Institute, Tanglewood Summer Festival, and The Aspen Summer Music Festival. She spent her last summer in New York and toured Latin America with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America which is an American Youth Orchestra organized by Carnegie Hall in NYC.
