During the American Civil War, the furnace was used to produce iron for Confederate artillery. Iron would have been used in all sorts of tools, cooking aids, and war material vital to a campaigning army.
The Battle of Tannehill Furnace was fought in March of 1865 and was part of the American Civil War’s Western Theater and also part of Wilson’s Raid, the largest cavalry operation of the Civil War. Tannehill Park is a day use park open 365 days a year. Park usage is generally limited to sunrise to sunset. The visitor center is open from 10am-4pm 7 days a week.
