This dramatic comedy, set in a small Czech town during the last years of World War II, explores what abnormal times do to normal people. Josef and Marie are a childless couple who yearn for a baby. Unfortunately, he is sterile. What unfolds blurs the moral distinction between victim, collaborator, and perpetrator.
Directed by Jan Hrebeik (Czech), 2001, 122 minutes, rated PG-13.
Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.
