UAB National Alumni House

The UAB National Alumni Society is proud to announce that our new "home" on campus, The UAB National Alumni Society House, is officially open! The dedication of this incredible new building located at 1301 10th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35294-4555 (next to Snoozy’s Bookstore) took place on January 20th, 2011. We look forward to hosting many new events in our beautiful new space on campus. The entire UAB community has been looking forward to this building being completed and becoming a new addition to the UAB campus.

UAB Spencer Honors House

School

The center of identity and community for the Honors Program is the Spencer Honors House, located on campus in the spacious and attractive environment of the Old Church at 1190 10th Avenue South. All instructional and social activities of the Honors Program take place there. The Honors House is also available for day-to-day use by Honors students for recreation, studying, meeting, and relaxing. The facilities include a kitchen, lounge areas, library, computers, pool table, and stereo. The offices of the director, associate director, and assistant director are also in the house.

The UAB Studios 2300 facility, located at 2300 Seventh Ave. South, includes studio space for Professor and Department Chair Erin Wright, M.F.A., and Assistant Professor Doug Barrett, M.F.A., both in graphic design; Assistant Professor John Douglas Powers, M.F.A., sculpture; Professor James Alexander, M.F.A., ceramics; Professor Bert Brouwer, M.F.A, and Professor Gary Chapman, M.F.A., both in painting; Assistant Professor Douglas Baulos, M.F.A., drawing; Professor Sonja Rieger, M.F.A., photography; Assistant Professor Christopher Lowther, M.F.A., digital media; and Associate Professor Derek Cracco, M.F.A., printmaking.

UAB Visual Arts Gallery

The Visual Arts Gallery of the University of Alabama at Birmingham is committed to critically considering and representing a diverse range of arts practices. The Gallery serves as a site for artistic innovation and interrogation through exhibitions, both contemporary and historical, which contribute to discourses on contemporary culture. Of particular interest are experimental practices, installation, film, video, time-based works, performances and digital media. The Gallery shows between ten and twelve exhibitions per year. These include a Juried Student Annual, works by Faculty and BFA Students, and a number of curated shows featuring works of local, national and international artists. University of Alabama at Birmingham Campus

UAB’s distinctive character is reflected in a campus that defies category. It cannot be labeled "metropolitan" or "traditional" because it is neither. And both… It is a state-of-the-art, 21st century campus with a close-knit, traditional environment comprising 86 city blocks. It is nestled in the serene foothills of the Appalachian Mountains but channels all the energy and opportunity of a cosmopolitan city. The campus is bustling with an array of student organizations and activity, while Birmingham offers a wealth of intenships and co-ops, outdoor pursuits and a thriving arts and culture scene.

University of Alabama Concert Hall

The Concert Hall is the centerpiece of the Moody Music Building. The Frank M. Moody Music Building is the home of UA’s School of Music and has 105,000 square feet of floor space used for rehearsal rooms, a recital hall, a media center, research labs for music education and therapy, and studios equipped for electronic and computer music among other things. The building also contains a 1,000-seat concert hall, patterned after the home of the Vienna Philharmonic, and a Holtkamp organ which stands three stories high with four manuals. The flowers, trees, and benches of the building’s large courtyard complete the picture of a modern facility in a graceful setting. The Moody Music Building is named for Frank Maxwell Moody, an 1897 UA graduate who went on to become a Tuscaloosa banker and dedicated community leader. The building opened in 1988 with a series of concerts that included a performance by Metropolitan Opera soprano Marilyn Horne.

School

The Department of Art and Art History offers undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree and the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art and the Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History. The department offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Arts degree in Studio Art and Art History, and the Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art. The Department of Art and Art History is part of the College of Arts and Sciences and is centrally located on the campus of The University of Alabama. All programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The Sarah Moody Gallery is also housed in Garland Hall.

At the second traffic light in Montevallo (Boundary Street) turn right and the entrance to campus is two blocks ahead. From the West: Travel I-20/59 West to I-459 by-pass. Continue on I-459 to I-65 South. Take I-65 South to Exit 238. Turn right off the ramp onto Highway 31. At the first traffic light, turn left on Highway 119. Take Highway 119 to downtown Montevallo (eleven miles). At the second traffic light in Montevallo (Boundary Street) turn right and the entrance to campus is two blocks ahead. From the East: Travel I-20/I-59 West to I-459 South toward Montgomery. Continue on I-459 to I-65 South. Take I-65 South to Exit 238. Turn right off the ramp onto Highway 31. At the first traffic light, turn left on Highway 119. Take Highway 119 to downtown Montevallo (eleven miles). At the second traffic light in Montevallo (Boundary Street) turn right and the entrance to campus is two blocks ahead. From the South: Take I-65 North to Exit 231. Turn right onto Highway 31 North. Take Highway 31 to County Road 22. Turn left on Highway 22 and travel to Highway 119. Turn left on Highway 119 South to downtown Montevallo. At second traffic light turn right on Boundary Street. The idea for Urban Cookhouse was developed and in June of 2010, UC opened for business in downtown Homewood, Alabama. One: year later, plans were finalized for UC to open its second location. The secret to its success isn’t in the menu or the welcoming interior, but lies within the family of people that work at Urban Cookhouse each day. Today it is a vibrant, bustling restaurant consistently serving excellent tasting food with exceptional customer service.

Urban Ministry, Inc.

Urban Ministry is the inner city ministry of the United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Our mission is to serve poor and low-income persons in the Birmingham area with programs of compassion and wholeness. Compassion programs address immediate human needs, while wholeness programs address long-term human needs. Although Urban Ministry maintains its historic identity as a faith-based organization, all of our programs are offered on a completely non-sectarian basis.

Urban Standard

Urban Standard opened its doors in November 2007 after a year of planning. The initial idea was to open a workshop/gallery, where the public could see the work of Tomek Wrzesien, the proprietor, as well the work of a rotating cast of local artists. That idea merged into a coffee and lunch spot complete with antiques. In the beginning, before Urban Standard had a home, Tomek and his friends Nancy, Buck and Jane Brock, spent months developing menu items and testing them out. Polish flavors and family recipes round out the daily menu selections while lovely fresh coffee from Birmingham ‘s own boutique roaster, Primavera, provides the buzz. One of the things making Urban so charming is the character riddled space it occupies. Having grown up in Poland , Tomek is quite familiar with the sophisticated café culture of the eastern European capitals. While the setting is purely American, the accent is definitely European. Tomek’s dedicated friends stepped in to help renovate this former office building, painstakingly chipping away decades of errant plaster and concrete. Why downtown? Urban Standard wants to bolster a growing community of loft dwellers, students, creative thinkers and busy professionals. It has quickly become a favorite haunt for anyone in the neighborhood, and more importantly, a destination for those not normally downtown.
